Hypnotic Abstracts
In these works, Stone unmakes the tradition of landscape painting, by filling the canvas with figurative elements, that almost, but do not quite, dissolve into a dizzying abstraction. There are flashes of Kandinsky, Picasso, Twombly and Pollock. But what entrances are evocations of nature: hares, and seals, all manner of bird life. If viewed through a strictly aesthetic lens, these works represent Stone’s boldest painting works to date, while advancing a conceptual narrative which has always been present.
Stone works between painting and sculpture. This way, he provides for a systematic reflection in his practice, of form and narrative. It also maintains the consistent vein of Stone’s work: stillness in movement. Even as these hypnotic works are encountered, they force a slowing down and a drawing in, until a sense of stillness arises in the viewer.
