Transcending the heroic

“… these works take traditional heraldic imagery and contexts often seen in our public spaces and reinvent them as intimate artistic explorations of materiality and colour. In these playful, aesthetic moments of transformation, we can also look to reimagine ideals which have been previously elevated in public spaces, including patriarchy and power.”

Each sculpture includes an original antique object draped with crafted ceramic. The original object carries with it the context it was created in, as a mirroring of the zeitgeist, an often 19th - 20th century desire for images and objects of the heroic.

The material drapes appear soft and curvaceous, though are solid. Each work creates an arrested moment between historic symbol and burgeoning new forms. Through this purposeful ambiguity, viewers are invited to reimagine what was and what might become.

sculpture commission: Old War Office, London

I was recently comissioned by OWO (the Old War Office, a new London Hotel) to create eight bespoke works from this series. Placed in each of the corner suites facing Whitehall, with views across to Horseguard’s Parade, creating an ideal interplay between the historic and the contemporary.

ARTIQ’s curation places these sculptures alongside images of wartime heroines, from Vera Atkins and Odette Sansom to Clementine Churchill. I wanted OWO guests to encounter these sculptures alongside views of war time heroines and traditional public statuary as seen from the windows.

The works are pictured below. Each work is 50cm high, which stands close to eye level when installed on each plinth. These works received a Britlist 2023 Award from Hotel Designs Magazine.

"This desire for learning and reimagining should be more critical and inspirational than what governments can do or say about public statues for what might be seen as their political purposes.“
